GameFly Game Rental

November 4th, 2009

How many of you guys have heard of Gamefly? It’s basically a rental service akin to Netflix, just for video games. You pay a monthly fee, and they send you the games. You can order up to 2 games at the same time, and can hold on to them for as long as you like (yes, you may even hold on to them for months!).

I’ve been a customer of Gamefly for 6 months, and am extremely impressed with their service. I currently pay $23/month and play about 8 games a month. Their shipping speeds are extremely fast (I live in Minnesota). Usually, my games arrive to their center within 1 - 2 days, and I get my next set of games overnight or in 2 days. I hear the same fast shipping applies to a friend of mine who resides in California, so apparently they have a good distribution system set up with USPS.

I must admit, Gamefly wasn’t always this good. The first time I utilized their service, I tried their 10 day trial. For the entire duration of their trial, my games didn’t arrive. I was extremely pissed and of course canceled my trial on the 9th day. The games arrived on the 10th. I promptly returned them.

However, 6 months ago (around April), a friend in my COD4 clan convinced me to try them out again. Turns out Gamefly just partnered up with USPS in 2009 to deliver games in a faster, and more reliable fashion. True to their word, the games I ordered on April 2nd arrived the morning of April 4th (amazing, that they deliver on weekends). I played through the games, and decided to extend my free trial for another month, for a small fee of $13. During that month I was sent and returned games 4 times (totaling 8 games). I never once had a hiccup. Impressed, I opted to become a full subscriber for $23/month. I’ve been using them ever since.

The only time in my 6 months with Gamefly that I had a problem is when I lost a game. Turns out I mismatched some DVDs and sent them the wrong DVD back. They called me up about it, and I explained everything to them. They said ok, don’t worry about it, sent me back my DVD, and never brought up the issue again. No fine, nothing. A bit weird considering that I was expecting to have to pay for losing the game, but hey I’m not complaining :)

I’ve never had a problem acquiring new releases on Gamefly. Games such as Prototype arrived on my doorstep the day after they were released, despite the high demand. It’s so good that I prefer to use Gamefly to rent newly released games instead of playing through them at a friends house.

The only reason I buy games anymore is for multiplayer. Since you can only keep 2 games at a time with Gamefly, it doesn’t really pay off to keep the games for multiple of months just for multiplayer. Much better to buy them. I did this in the case of Call of Duty 4 and Battlefield Bad Company.

However, the cool thing about Gamefly is it allows you to try out multiplayer games before buying them. I remember thinking about getting Army of 2 when it came out, but it turns out the game wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be. I played through it on Gamefly and got bored after a week, so I just returned for another game. $50 saved right there. Same thing with Call of Duty 4. I got it on Gamefly and played it for a month. Eventually I decided to buy it since the multiplayer was so good :)

Ultimately, the reason I use Gamefly is simple economics. New games are expensive ($40-$70) and I am an avid gamer, who like do play several games a month. I can’t possible afford to pay hundreds of dollars a month for new, retail games. However, with the small price of $23 a month, I get to play as many games as I like, with no hassle whatsoever. Heck, I don’t even have to leave my house to buy the games; they get delivered to my doorstep.

Look, if you don’t believe me on how good Gamefly is, keep in mind they have a 10 day free trial. Just sign up for it on their website:
www.GameFly.com

… and try it out. Leave me some comments to tell me what you think about it.

Peace, and I hope this helps you guys :)
